What is a pet food subscription in a pet store POS?
A pet food subscription is a repeat order saved against a customer: the product, the size and how often they need it. On the due date the POS creates the next order automatically, so the store can pack it for pickup, deliver it or ring it through when the customer walks in — without anyone having to remember.
- Works for food, litter, treats, flea and tick, aquarium consumables
- Any interval: every 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks, monthly, or a custom number of days
- One customer can have several repeat orders, one per pet
How a repeat order goes round

What usually goes wrong with auto-ship — and how this avoids it
We built the flow around the problems stores told us about.
Problem
The bag is out of stock on the due date
Due orders count against stock in advance, so low-stock alerts fire before the shelf is empty, not after.
Problem
The customer’s dog changed food
Edit the repeat order in seconds — swap the product, keep the schedule and the history.
Problem
Holidays and travel
Skip one cycle or pause the subscription; it restarts on the date you choose.
Problem
Price increases from the supplier
Repeat orders use the product’s current price unless you lock a price for that customer’s price group.
In-store repeat orders vs online auto-ship
Why a local repeat order can win against the big online stores.
| Your store with repeat orders | Online auto-ship | |
|---|---|---|
| Ready when | Packed on the due date, collect same day | Ships in 1–3 days |
| Running out early | Walk in and collect today | Wait for an expedited order |
| Advice | Staff who know the pet | Chat support |
| Extras | Groom, treats and toys in the same visit | Separate orders |

Food subscriptions & repeat orders: questions
Can I set up a dog food subscription at the register?
Yes. Complete the sale as normal, then mark it as a repeat order and choose the interval. The next order is created automatically on its due date with the same items.
What intervals can a repeat order use?
Days, weeks or months — for example every 28 days for a 30 lb bag, or monthly for litter. You can also set a custom number of days when a customer’s pet eats faster or slower.
Does the customer have to pay in advance?
No. Most stores take payment at pickup. You can also take it on delivery or record it against the customer’s account if you offer store credit or pay-later.
Can one customer have repeat orders for several pets?
Yes. Each repeat order is its own record, so a household with two dogs and a cat can have three schedules, each linked to the right pet profile.
What happens if the food is out of stock?
The due order still appears on the refill list, flagged as short, so you can call the customer or substitute. Low-stock alerts include stock already promised to upcoming repeat orders.
Can customers manage their subscription online?
Customers can reorder from your auto-generated online store. Changing the schedule is done by your staff at the register or in the back office, which keeps control with the store.
Do subscriptions work with delivery?
Yes. Mark the order for delivery and it shows on the refill list with the address. Delivery itself is done by your own driver or courier.
Can I give subscribers a discount?
Yes. Put subscribers in a customer group with its own price list or a percentage discount, and repeat orders use it automatically.
Is this included in every plan?
Yes. Repeat orders are part of Shop, Shop & Groom and Chain.
