Pet store POS buyer's guide 2026: features, prices, questions

How to choose a pet store POS in 2026: the features that matter, what systems cost, hidden fees to check and questions for every demo.

By GetPetStorePOS Editorial Desk · Published

Key takeaways

  • List what your store does weekly — repeat food, grooming, dates — and buy for that.
  • Compare total monthly cost: POS + grooming app + loyalty + website, not the headline plan.
  • Check whether you must use the vendor's card processing.
  • Insist on a trial long enough to see a full food cycle.

A point-of-sale system is the one piece of software every person in your store touches every day. Choosing it is not a feature-checklist exercise; it is deciding how your store will work for the next five years.

This guide is written for independent pet stores — with or without grooming — in 2026.

Step 1: Write down what your store actually does

Before looking at any vendor, list what happens in your store every week:

  • How much of your revenue is food and litter bought on a cycle?
  • Do you groom or offer self-wash — or plan to?
  • Do you sell dated products (food, treats, supplements, fish food)?
  • Do you have regulars you know by pet name?
  • One store, or more coming?
  • Which languages do your staff and customers use?

These answers decide which features matter. A store that is 60% food needs repeat orders and date tracking far more than an advanced e-commerce theme.

Step 2: The features that matter in a pet store

Feature Why it matters Ask on the demo
Repeat orders / subscriptions Keeps food customers from online auto-ship “Show me setting one up at the counter.”
Customer & pet profiles Allergies, diets, birthdays at checkout “Can one customer have three pets?”
Lot & best-by dates Cuts expired write-offs “Show me the expiry report.”
Loyalty points Brings regulars back “Is loyalty included or an add-on?”
Grooming bookings One ticket for groom + retail “Is it in the POS or a separate app?”
Variations & barcodes Bag sizes, flavours “How do 4, 15 and 30 lb bags look?”
Online store Customers check stock before they drive “Is it included? Is it built from my catalogue?”
Multi-store Shared customers and transfers “Can points be used in both stores?”

Step 3: Compare the total monthly cost

The headline plan is rarely the real price. Add up:

  1. POS plan per location (and per register, if charged).
  2. Grooming software, if separate — often $49–105+ a month on its own (G2 and Capterra listings, checked October 2026).
  3. Loyalty add-on.
  4. E-commerce add-on.
  5. Website hosting or retainer.
  6. Card processing — and whether you are forced to use the vendor’s.

Our savings calculator does this sum in USD, AED or PKR.

Step 4: The questions to ask every vendor

  1. Must I use your card processing? What happens if I leave?
  2. Is there a contract or an early-termination fee?
  3. Which features are add-ons?
  4. How do I export my data, and in what format?
  5. How do you import my current products, customers and loyalty balances — and what does it cost?
  6. Where is my data hosted and backed up?
  7. What languages can my staff use?
  8. What happens when the internet goes down?
  9. How long is the trial, and is a card required?
  10. Who do I call, in which hours, in my time zone?

Step 5: Run a real trial

A demo shows what a vendor wants you to see; a trial shows what your staff will live with.

  • Import a real product file, not 10 test items.
  • Ring sales with your actual scanner and printer.
  • Set up three repeat orders and a grooming booking.
  • Receive one delivery with dates.
  • Let your newest staff member try the register without training.

A 30-day trial lets you see one complete food cycle.

Red flags

  • Prices only “on request”.
  • A long contract for a small store.
  • Your card rate is tied to the software.
  • No way to export your data.
  • Features that “are coming soon” without a date.

Questions on this topic

How much does a pet store POS cost?

Entry-level pet store POS software typically costs about $49–150 per location per month for retail checkout and inventory (Franpos guide, checked October 2026). Big general retail brands' comparable tiers were around $79–89 per location when we checked, before grooming or loyalty add-ons.

Do I need a pet-specific POS?

You need pet-specific workflows — repeat orders, pet profiles, best-by dates, grooming. Some general POS systems cover these with add-ons; a pet store edition includes them.

What hidden fees should I watch for?

Mandatory payment processing, per-register fees, paid loyalty or e-commerce add-ons, setup and migration fees, and long contracts with early-termination charges.

How long should a POS trial be?

Long enough to see one full food cycle — about 30 days — so you can set up repeat orders and watch them come round.
